The hakama is a skirt-like pants, and it was a traditional piece of samurai clothing. As Japanese martial arts maintain their roots in samurai culture, the hakama could therefore be considered as a symbol of that lineage, and of the precious knowledge that is passed on. Inspiring a feeling of respect for the unbroken line of teaching.
