The moment you begin your Aikido journey, you put on a white gi and a white belt. If you commit and persevere you will wear the Hakama when you reach black belt. This uniform represent unity with your fellow practitioners and respect for your art. It stands up to the rigors of training and it carries you from your day to day distractions into the mindfulness of practice.
In short, and in all honesty, the reason Mel chose Aikido was to wear that cool black skirt.
